a) 3 pieces when the whole has 4 equal pieces. The whole is continuous in length, which requires that the pieces or each unit of the whole to have equal sizes. Let’s say the illustration is a rectangular pizza with 4 equal slices. ¾ of the pizza is shaded, that can be represented as what has been eaten.
b) There’s a table with a 4 piece fruit and a veggie basket. You lay them out on the table and see you have 3 apples and a carrot. ¾ of the units are apples and ¼ of the unit is a carrot, making the illustration discrete for having the ability to factor out how many of the pieces or units, on the table, are apples and how many aren’t.
c) A skating crew has 8 members. ¾ of them are guys and the remaining ¼ are girls. The illustration can let the white squares to represent the 2 girls as a part-whole of the whole team, measured by a count of the objects in the whole. Countable objects are discrete. The shaded squares can represent the boys in the crew making it ¾ of the units represent the boys, even though there’s 8 squares the fraction is simplified but in reality what this says is 6 of the 8 members are guys. The outer rectangle is the whole or in this case represents the unity of that one team.
d) It’s sundown on a chilly Saturday and a 13 year old boy named Little Billy Jr. decided to jump the fence of an old forgotten carnival that had gone bankrupted because of not enough people going. Well, forgotten for the most part with the exception of Billy’s father, Bill, who told him stories of how he would spend countless hours there when he was Billy’s age. How he would always spend all of his allowance buying the best hotdogs in the world there. He would always have more to say about the hot dogs there than the park itself. How he loved how the stand itself was a giant hot dog and old man Tom, the owner of the stand would tell him his daily joke of the day every time he would go.
Billy walked slowly; exploring the park amazed but more disappointed at how old and rusty everything looked. He sat down on a small bench and thought to himself, “My dad has bad taste, this park looks like a train wreck who everyone forgot about, but him.” He stood and proceeded to find the exit, but as he walked he found himself confronted by the giant hot dog stand his father had mentioned. He remembered how his dad would always say, “I would kill for one of those hot dogs right now!” and how he would stare at him evilly after he said that but would always laugh after and tell Billy Jr. he was kidding and how those where just happy memories now from more than 20 years ago and would always end it by saying “Killing is bad.”
Billy Jr. ran in excitement thinking, “maybe old man Tom left some premade hotdogs,” not really knowing why he would but eagerly proceeded to open the cabinets to check anyways. To his surprise, a stack of premade and wrapped hotdogs where neatly stacked in one of the cabinets. Billy Jr. was so excited and thought, “I can take a few for my dad!” and quickly put as many as he could fit in his pockets. He then was filled with a immense urge to try one, they were the best hotdogs in the world, well according to his dad. He ripped the plastic off the hot dog uncovering a moldy old hot dog, but Billy Jr. was too excited to notice and quickly proceeded to eat it. He ate ¾ of the whole hot dog, almost angrily you could say, until he stopped because he was choking. After he stopped coughing he finally noticed the state of the hot dog and dropped the remaining 1/4 that was left. He was so disgusted that he threw up right there and then with the puke landing next to the uneaten piece almost forming the hot dog again. He dropped all the hot dogs and left home and even though he had eaten a bad hot dog he left with the idea in mind that at least he had his own story to tell now to his father and maybe his own kids.
This illustration can represent the moldy hot dog (whole) on the ground with the ¾ (the darker blue) representing what had been purged and the ¼ (lighter blue) what had gone uneaten. This makes the figure a continuous length because you can measure the difference of the two different state of the same hot dog.

a) 2/3
A rectangle with 3 equal segments and 2 of the 3 being shaded. Part-whole view, 2 wholes are portioned into 3 equal parts using sharing equally division or partitive division.
b) 7/4 = 1 ¾ = 4/4 + ¾
Two squares with 4 equal segments one completely shaded and the other with all but one of the segments shaded. How many 4s are there in 7? 1 ¾ using repeated-subtraction division.
c)2 3/8 = 19/8
3 boxes with 8 squares in them, 2 of the boxes having all squares shaded and the other one only 3 of the 8 shaded. Repeated subtraction division for every 8 you subtract, that creates a whole. You can also think of it as quantitive division where you see how many 8 divide into 19, which is 2 3/8. It can be interpreted to mean sharing equally, let’s say you have 19 sodas to package in 3 boxes that can only fit 8 each.
d) 0/4 = 0
Four equal pieces with nothing shaded using partitive division or sharing nothing equally with 4 people.
e) 3/1 = 3
A rectangle with 3 equal or unique shapes in it with all of them shaded. 3 wholes are in 3/1 using quotitive division.
3. Made 2 equals rectangles aligned together next to each other with how many segments each one (bottom number) had and how shaded whatever the top number was and compared.
a) 3/4 is larger b) 1/8 is larger
